2008-02-18 The 7th Annual Forum on City Informatization in the Asia-Pacific Region (CIAPR VII) will be convened from 26 to 27 May 2008 in Shanghai International Convention Center, China. According to spirit of Resolution 231 of the 54th session of the United Nations General Assembly, The Forum on City Informatization in the Asia-Pacific Region (CIAPR) was initiated as a three year cooperation project by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN/DESA) and the Shanghai Municipal People¡¯s Government with support of the Regional Bureau for Asia and the Pacific in UNDP, in response to the call for bridging the digital divide of the ECOSOC Ministerial Declaration and the United Nations Millennium Summit. The project was founded in 2000 with the support from the Ministry of Information Industry of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. CIAPR I witnessed the adoption of the Declaration of the High-Level Forum on City Informatization in the Asia-Pacific Region, i.e. Shanghai Declaration, which put forward the principles of "Independence, equality, voluntarism, mutual benefit, and a win-win situation for all." Following the Shanghai Declaration, The Regional Cooperation Office for City Informatization (RCOCI) was established as a standing institute, and the Asia-Pacific City Informatization Website (www.apcity.org) and the Asia-Pacific regional center for UNPAN (United Nations Online Network on Public Administration and Finance) was also established. The objectives of the High-Level Forum on City Informatization in the Asia-Pacific Region are: with a view to the development and cooperation of city informatization in the Asia-Pacific region, to provide a platform for policy and decision makers of the municipal governments in this region for communication and cooperation; to enhance mutual understanding and cooperation and promote the development of the municipalities (or regions) participating in the session; to further reduce the gap in informatization level among cities in the Asia-Pacific region, bridge the digital divide and improve the city informatization of the region. Focusing the theme of ¡°ICT for Better City¡±, CIAPR VII will hold a series of forums and workshops to explore the most concerned topics on informatization in the current society, exchange the up-to-date research achievements on information technologies and become a platform for study and exchange in the global ICT sector, thus promoting the development of city informatization and advancing the application of information technologies in World Expo 2010 Shanghai. CIAPR VII will receive a large number of participants from the world, including officials of country and regional governments, senior UN officials, as well as representatives from NGOs, academic and research institutes, enterprises and civil societies.
